Citation: Calicasphaera Kleijne, 1991
Rank: Genus
Type species: Calicasphaera diconstricta Kleijne, 1991

Distinguishing features: Chalice-shaped coccoliths. Monomorphic

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Calicasphaera *

Morphology: The coccoliths outer tube of the coccoliths is formed of regular calcit rhombohedra, at the base there is usually a proximal flange conssiting of a single ring of crystallites and a proximal plate which may cover the central area or have a central opening (especially in C. concava). In distal view additional less regular crystalites ocur within the tube, it is not celar whether these form an inner tube or or a recessed distal cover. The irregular appearance of these inner crystallites is a distinctive aspect of the morphology of the genus.

Phylogenetic relations: Possible affinities to Turrisphaera - based on general morphlogy.
