Calyculus noeliae

Classification: ntax_mesozoic -> Podorhabdales -> Calyculaceae -> Calyculus -> Calyculus noeliae
Sister taxa: C. - late Jurassic ⟩⟨ C. cribrum, C. depressus ⟩⟨ C. noeliae ⟩⟨ C. hommerili, C. serrai ⟩⟨ C. absolutus, C. derivatus, C. magnus, C. sp.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Calyculus): High, broad, flaring distal-shield composed of radial, non-imbricating elements, and a proximal-shield which is often reduced to a simple, narrow cycle of elements; central-area structures are highly variable, including numerous bars, concentric structures, nets and grills.
This taxon: Calyculus with central area with around 14-20 lateral bars. Rim elevation very variable, even on a single coccosphere

Taxonomy:

Citation: Calyculus noeliae (Goy, 1979) Crux, 1987
Rank: Species
Basionym: Vikosphaera noeliae Goy, in Goy et al. 1979
Variants: Goy et al. (1979) showed that these two forms occurred on the same cocccosphere, so it is not logical to describe them as separate taxa.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: V. noelae * , V. noelae depressa * , V. noelae recondita *

Morphology: Collapsed coccospheres suggest that there is considerable variation in coccolith height on single coccospheres and this lead Goy (1979, 1981) to differentiate tall (recondita) and short (depressa) forms, which he termed subspecies.
There are two obvious problems with this. First, it is dificult to defend giving different taxonomic names to two entities produced by a single organism. Second, the presence of these two sub-species automatically implies the existence of a third sub-species C. noeliae subsp. noeliae, which is not in fact defined under Goy's scheme. The best alternative is probably not to use the terms recondita and depressa, but where relevant to note if the elevated or depressed form was observed.

Phylogenetic relations: Thought to be ancestral to Carinolithus superbus
