Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Citation: Chrysochromulina vexillifera Manton&Oates 1983Taxonomic rank: speciesType locality: ollected 13 August 1977 in Academy Bay Santa Cruz, Galapagos Islands from a depth of 15 m, sea temperature 22 °CFarinacci catalog page (& compiler): n/a Current citation: Chrysochromulina vexillifera Manton and Oates 1983
Original Description Protoplast c. 8 x 6 μm, with twoplastids; the flagella (two) c. 20 μn and the haptonema longer. Scale-case with 14 terminal spines at each end. Spines not exceeding 15 μm and often less, each tapered, pointed and supported at the base by four struts adnate to the surface of a strongly convex and flexible base- plate somewhat smaller than the outer plate-scales elsewhere on the periplast. Outer plate-scales flat, approaching 2 μm diam. though usually a little less, the contour round or elliptical, with a narrow thickened margin projecting slightly on the distal face, the latter also carrying four cruciform adnate ridges resembling vestigial struts no longer supporting a central spine and usually arranged obliquely in a configuration recalling St Andrews cross on the flag of Scotland. The distal surface between struts completely covered by fine threads radiating towards the centre in bundles initiated near the scale edge; patterning on the obverse (proximal) face the usual arrangement of radiating ridges in quadrants. An underlayer of numerous small oval plates also present close to the plasmalemma, each 0.5 x 0.8 μm with a narrow raised rim and faint surface patterning of radial ridges on the proximal face but virtually patternless on the distal face. Etymology: Latin - carrying flags
