Numerous species have been described in Chrysochromulina. Edvardsen et al. (2011) showed that several of these should be removed into a separate genus Haptolina, within the Prymnesiacea.The remaining species are divided here into three groups:
In addition, note that the form described as Chrysochromulina parkeae is now known to be a phase in the life-cycle of Braarudosphaera bigelowii and so is described separately - Braarudosphaera bigelowii ALT
