Flagella and haptonema inserted ventrally and subapically. Cells covered by small organic scales with patterns of radiating and concentric ribs or fibrils. Flagellar apparatus with a simple R1 flagellar root that predominantly contains few microtubules (<10) and lacks a bundle of microtubules. Cells with two yellow-brown chloroplasts each with an immersed pyrenoid. Nucleotide sequences for the SSU and LSU rDNA distinct.
