Conusphaera maledicto

Classification: ntax_mesozoic -> Nannoliths inc sedis -> Eoconusphaeraceae -> Conusphaera -> Conusphaera maledicto
Sister taxa: C. mexicana, C. rothii ⟩⟨ C. maledicto, C. sinespina, C. sp.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Conusphaera): Tapering nannoliths with steeply sloping rim and central area filled with a core of radially arranged elements. Most commonly seen in side view. The rim elements are joined along vertical sutures (protolith-rim-like).
This taxon: Small Conusphaera (<4 µm) with central core divided into 4 segments in side view. Elliptical in plan view

Taxonomy:

Citation: Conusphaera maledicto Varol & Bowman 2019
Rank: Species

Taxonomic discussion:

Etymology: From Latin maledicto, fence – referring its fencelike appearance in the light microscope (LM).

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: C. maledicto [no catalog entry yet]

Morphology: C. maledicto differs from C. mexicana minor in displaying four core segments in side view (at 0°) in the light microscope and in being strongly elliptical in plan view. In side view C. mexicana minor has only two core segments and is sub-circular in plan view. It is distinguished from C. rothii minor by having straight core segments. C. sinespina is similar but the core elements are much lower, not rising above the wall. C. maledicto has probably been included in C. mexicana minor. (Varol & Bowman 2019)
