Catalog entries: Pavlova viridis
Original description: Cells solitary, motile, dorsiventrally compressed metabolic, circular in dorsal aspect, oblong or obovate in lateral aspect, 6.0 x 4.8 x 4.0 µm. Two unequal heterdynamic flagella and a haptonema arising ventrally. An anterior long flagellum, 9-12 µm long, sinuately coiled when at rest, clad with very small spherical knob-scales approx. 0.02- 0.03 µm in diameter. A rudimentary short flagellum, generally flexed backwards and hook-shaped. Haptonema 0. 75 µm proximal expansion and 1 µm distal extension.
Chloroplasts, one parietal, yellowish green, markedly two lobed: Without pyrenoid and stigma. Nucleus anterior. Two vacuoles with reserve materials in the posterior part of the cell.
Morphology: Motile cells are spherical with a green parietal plastid. The anterior flagellum and the haptonema emerge from a ventral depression. The anterior flagellum is covered with knob scales. The plastid has parallel thylakoid lamellae, with no eyespot and no pyrenoid. The posterior flagellum is reduced to the axoneme structure with only nine single structural microtubules rather than nine triplets. [Bendif et al. 2011]
