Taxonomic discussion: Derivation of name: From medius, meaning ‘intermediate’, referring to the morphology of this species, which shares features seen in both Ericsonia and Coccolithus coccoliths.

Distinguishing features: medium to large (~6–11μm), subcircular to circular; moderately broad upper-tube cycle and narrow central area;

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: E. media *

Medium to large, subcircular to circular Ericsonia with a moderately broad upper-tube cycle and central area that is less than the rim width.
In XPL, the upper-tube cycle appears to be narrower than that seen in typical Ericsonia coccoliths and broader than that seen in C. pelagicus. The outer edge of the upper-tube cycle shows a distinct beaded appearance at certain focus points.
