Taxonomy:
Citation: Haptophyta Hibberd 1976
Taxonomic rank: phylum
Taxonomic discussion: As shown three classes are now recognised within the Haptophytes. The coccolithophores all  belong to the class Prymnesiophyceae and include several orders. The informal grouping of other Haptophytes is artificial but used here since the main focus of this site is taxonomy of the coccolithopores.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (other groups): Other nannoplankton and microplankton groups
This taxon: non-coccolithophore Haptophytes
