Parent taxon (Lithraphidites): Bladed, rod-shaped nannoliths typically tapering at both ends and with a cruciform cross-section and variably developed lateral projections; crystallographic c-axis perpendicular to length
This taxon: Lithraphidites species with a finely serrated blade. The blade may be quite broad but is generally broken to a more slender shape

Taxonomic discussion: This species is similar to the later L. alatus (Albian - Cenomanian). It is not clear from the original diagnosis how they are separated, but arguably L. houghtonii is broader and less regularly tapering.

Morphology:

The blade serrations are not are not as ordered or as coarse as in Lithraphidites moray-firthensis ( Jeremiah 2001).

Size:
9–12 _m long (mean 11 _m), 50 specimens measured. ( Jeremiah 2001)

Geological Range:
Notes: L. houghtonii has two acme occurrences within the Aptian of the North Sea. Its earliest quantitative incursion occurs within the lower part of the Ewaldi Marl (Valhall V6, Johnson & Lott, 1993) whilst a later incursion within the martinioides ammonite Zon
