Original description: Cells strongly metabolic, either elongated, ovoid or amoeboid, usually compressed, base acute; chromatophores two, large, lateral, not extending to the base, dull yellow, granular; flagella two, unequal and inserted at some distance below the apex, the larger directed towards the apex and the shorter outwards; a conspicuous red stigma and a small contracting vacuole are present in the apical region; at the posterior end one to three leucosin bodies are present.
Propagation is by longitudinal division in the non-motile stage.

Morphology: The motile phase is dominant and the strongly metabolic cells have a yellow-green parietal plastid with a red-orange eyespot located near the flagellar insertion. Filipodia are sometimes observed extending from the cell surface. The hairy anterior flagellum is covered with knob scales, while the shorter posterior flagellum is naked. The haptonema is often visible. Smaller body knob scales surround the plasma membrane of the cell body. The plastid has parallel thylakoid lamellae, some osmiophilic globules forming an eyespot on the inner face and located near the flagellar pit , and a bulging pyrenoid. [Bendif et al. 2011]
