Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description
Brown algae, the cells of which divide in the mother envelope and form two- to multicellular, irregular, short, thread-like colonies. Usually two chromatophores in each cell. As reserve substances fat and chrysose. The swarmers have two long flagella and two chromatophores with pyrenoids. [translation from Google translate]

Coccolithophoracea with a digenetic cycle composed of a planktonic generation and a pseudo-filamentous or pseudo-parenchymal benthic generation. The planktonic generation is characterized by the presence of cricoliths typical of Cricosphaera. The scales underlying the coccoliths are circular, with a thickened margin and showing, on both sides, the same ornamentation made up of radial striations and a loose fibrillar platoon. Scales of the haptonema smaller, oval. The benthic generation is composed of cells containing one or two parietal plastids carrying a prominent pyrenoid; they have a coating made up of several layers of subcircular scales, without marginal thickening, characterized by radial ridges arranged in four sectors on one side and by tight concentric ridges on the other side. This generation emits zoids with two apical flagella and a haptonema, carrying the same type of scales and devoid of coccoliths.
