Pocillithus spinulifer
Coccoliths with high, narrow walls; central-area with axial cross supporting tall spine

Taxonomy:

Citation: Pocillithus Dunkley Jones et al. 2009
taxonomic rank: Genus
Type species: Pocillithus spinulifer Dunkley Jones et al. 2009
Taxonomic discussion: Tentatively included in the Papposphaeraceae on grounds of being a narrow-rimmed murolith with central cross and quadrate spine

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Papposphaeraceae): Narrow-rimmed muroliths, mostly with prominent central structures.
This taxon: Coccoliths with tall, narrow, quadrate spines; high rim with smooth distal rim. Only known from fossil record,

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Pocillithus *

Morphology:

Spines have narrow axial canal. Proximal cycle not seen to date, but these are very small coccoliths. No evidence of coccolith dimorphism seen (Dunkley Jones et al. 2009)
