Taxonomic discussion: This species was invalid when originally described by Kamptner (1963), since he assigned it to a provisional genus - Ellipsoplacolithus. It was subsequently validated by Gartner (1969), when he assigned it to his new genus Pseudoemiliania. For an extended explanation of this see van Heck (1990).

Distinguishing features: Circular to sub-circular with >12 slits, length >4µm

Morphology: Coccoliths circular to sub-circular with >12 slits, length >4µm. Abundant in the Late Pliocene, but well-developed, large, circular forms only occur in the Pleistocene.

Last occurrence (top): at top of NN19 zone (100% up, 0.4Ma, in Ionian stage). Data source: zonal marker, e.g. Young 1998
First occurrence (base): within NN15 zone (3.70-3.92Ma, base in Zanclean stage). Data source: Young 1998
