Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Taxonomic rank: class
Type species: Pavlomulinales M. Kawachi & I. Inouye ord. nov.

Original Description

Cells found widely in marine waters. One nucleus, two to four chloroplasts surrounded by four membranes. Peripheral endoplasmic reticulum beneath the cell membrane. 190-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin and 4-keto-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin absent. Flagellate cells with two flagella and a haptonema. Flagella with knob scales.

Editors' Notes
Prior to the study of Kawachi et al (2021) this group had only been recognised in environmental DNA studies and had not been formally described. The key publicaitons for the environmental DNA recognition are Rappé et al. (1998) and Kim et al. (2011)
