Scrippsiella acuminata
Sub-spherical to ellipsoidal; Wall of largish irregular weakly-interlocking elements with a central spine; c-axes tangential to surface and randomly oriented in plane of surface;
Scrippsiella regalis
Like S. acuminata but spines longer and sutures between elements more complex

Original description: Scrippsiella sweeneyi gen. nov., sp. nov., was proposed by Balech (1959, p. 196). Although described and figured by Balech (1959, p. 196, 12c, text-figs. 1, 2), no Latin diagnosis was given for the genus or species. Since Balech used botanical classification, both the genus and species are invalid without Latin diagnoses. The following diagnosis is presented in order to validate these names.

Scrippsiella sweeneyi gen. nov., sp. nov.; epitheca conica, hypotheca rotundata, cine ceratibus. Cingulum latum cavazoniforme, descendens, per 2/3 partis latitudinis dispositum , sine laciniis. Cingulum quinque laminas aequas atque sinistrorsus laminam transitionis habet. Sulcus profundus modice latus dextrorsus paululo curvatus, lamina posteriore maxima. Formula laminarum : 4', 3a, 7", 6c, 5"', 2" ", Cellula 24-32.5µm long., 19-24 µm transdiametro. Chromatophori multi, elliptici fuscovirides. Habitus: in aqua marina, in loco La Jolla, California dicto. Typus: S. sweeneyi sp. nov. Scrippsiella sweenyi sp. nov., holotypus: text-fig. la in Balech
