Taxonomic discussion: Lower and Middle Miocene sphenoliths are highly variable and S. moriformis is something of a bucket identification.

Distinguishing features: Beehive shaped sphenolith, apical elements not in extinction in vertical position. No spine, upper and lower parts of similar size.

Geological Range:
Notes: There is no clear consensus on the first occurrence of the S. moriformis since some workers (e.g Varol 1989) place the earliest forms in S. primus whilst others (e.g. Bown 2005) include them in S. moriformis. Similary the last occurrence is a gradational transition into S. abies.
