Syracosphaera mediterranea HOL gracillima type

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Holococcoliths -> flat-topped -> S. mediterranea HOL type -> Syracosphaera mediterranea HOL gracillima type
Sister taxa: C. multipora, S. histrica HOL, S. mediterranea HOL gracillima type, S. mediterranea HOL hellenica type, S. mediterranea HOL wettsteinii type

Taxonomy:

Citation: Syracosphaera mediterranea Lohmann 1902 HOL gracillima type, sensu Geisen et al., 2002
Rank: Species
Basionym: Calyptrosphaera gracillima Kamptner 1941
Synonyms:
Variants: Calyptrolithophora hasleana (Gaarder 1962) Heimdal in Heimdal & Gaarder 1980 = Corisphaera hasleana Gaarder 1962 = Sphaeroclayptra hasleana (Gaarder) Kling 1975. Similar to C. gracillima but, central protrusion extended into bar and with rim around distal surface better developed (Kleijne 1991). Intergrades between the hasleana and gracillima morphotypes occur and the distinction is probably artificial.

Distinguishing features: BCs tube flaring, no flange, hexagonal mesh fabric; distal cover flat, hexagonal mesh fabric without larger pores; discontinuous rim formed from two rows of crystallites; boss, prominent, slightly off-centre, with irregular fabric.
CFCs with arched distal surface rather than a clear bridge.

Biology & life-cycles: The life-cycle association was originally proposed based on a single, good, combination coccosphere observed by Cortes & Bollmann (2002), see also discussion in Geisen et al. (2002). It has since been confirmed by findings of additional combination coccospheres by Triantaphyllou et al. 2016.
