Syracosphaera sp. Y

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Syracosphaeraceae -> Syracosphaera -> SY mediterranea group -> Syracosphaera sp. Y
Sister taxa: S. mediterranea, S. maxima, S. sp. Y

Citation: Syracosphaera sp. Y Young et al., 2003
Rank: Species

Distinguishing features: Similar to S. mediterranea but wall is narrower and higher, lacking clear inner cycle and with small central spine.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages:

Morphology: Figured by Kleijne (1993, pl. 3:3) as C. mediterranea, and by Winter et al. (1979, pl. IV fig. 2), as C. mediterranea.

Biology & life-cycles: HOL ?= Calyptrolithina cf. multipora. A single combination coccosphere, illustrated by Young et al. 2003 (plate 23, figs 9, 12) was found by Vita Pariente in the Gulf of Mexico. Definitive identification is not possible but it appears to consist of the same Coronosphaera species and a holococcolith similar to Calyptrolithina multipora, although with less pores than is usual.
