Taxonomic discussion: The extant and Quaternary form T. quadrilaminata (Okada and McIntyre, 1977) Jordan, Kleijne and Heimdal, 1993 is significantly smaller and has a much narrower rim so T. symeonidesii should probably be retained as a discrete species.

Distinguishing features: Elliptical with moderately narrow rim surrounding central-area filled by four plates.
