Citation: Umbellosphaeraceae Young et al., 2003Rank: FamilyType species: Umbellosphaera tenuisTaxonomic discussion: Kleijne (1993) described a sub-family, the Umbellosphaeroideae, within the Syracosphaeraceae, including Umbellosphaera and Gaarderia. With higher resolution SEM observations and better understanding of Syracosphaera coccolith morphology it became clear that Gaarderia corolla should be recombined into Syracosphaera, but that Umbellosphaera is not associated with the Syracosphaerales. For consistency of taxonomic usage, Young et al. (2003) raised the taxon Umbellosphaeroideae from sub-family to family status.
Distinguishing features: Parent taxon (Coccolith families inc sed): 2N: Various heterococcolith groups not obviously related to the well-defined orders
N: mostly unknown This taxon: Placolith-like with distal shield much larger than proximal, predominantly formed from R-units, V-units vestigial.
Morphology: Coccosphere dimorphic; coccoliths consist of a funnel-shaped distal part on a flat base. The funnel elements are continuous with the basal plate elements of the central area; a flange may be present around the basal plate, formed by a separate cycle of elements. Coccoliths are variable in size. Size:
Geological Range: Last occurrence (top): Extant. Data source: Total of range of species in this database First occurrence (base): in upper part of Zanclean Stage (82% up, 3.9Ma, in Zanclean stage). Data source: Total of range of species in this database
Plot of occurrence data:
Range-bar - range as quoted above, pink interval top occurs in, green interval base occurs in.
Triangles indicate an event for which a precise placement has been suggested
Neptune data: this is a higher taxon page so Neptune data is not plotted. For the customisable plot option go to a genus page Parent: Coccolith families inc sed
