Taxonomy:
Distinguishing features: Process lozenge-shaped; maximum width about half-way up process.
Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: V. iaculifer *
Morphology: Coccosphere shape unknown, collapsed specimens spherical–subspherical in outline, 5.3–6.4 µm in diameter (excluding appendages). Coccosphere dimorphic, monothecate, bearing 50–70 ordinary (body) coccoliths and 18–22 tubular coccoliths. Body coccoliths elliptical, 0.8–0.9 µm x 1.0–1.5 µm, and 0.3–0.4 µm in height, flaring outer wall elements, and inner cycle of much shorter wall elements. Central area apparently open.
Tubular coccoliths identical to body coccoliths, but with central bar across short axis, supporting quadrangular appendage, 1.9–5.1 µm long. Basal portion of process narrow (0.2–0.3 µm wide), middle portion slightly inflated (0.5 µm), distal portion tapered (0.1 µm). Coccoliths with very long tapered processes inflated in the basal portion. Process wall comprising single row of brick-like elements, ranging in shape from square (only near the base) to rectangular. Ecology & Biogeography: Depp photic, rare
