Braarudosphaera bigelowii - Cretaceous

Variant: Braarudosphaera bigelowii - Cretaceous is regarded here as a variant of Braarudosphaera bigelowii.
I.e. It is a subjective junior synonym, but some workers many find it useful for some studies (e.g. experienced biostratigraphers working with abundant, well preserved material), but for most purposes differentiating it is not reccomended. Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Pontosphaera bigelowii Gran & Braarud, 1935
Synonyms:
Variants: Although separately described both names refer to forms with imbricate elements.
Taxonomic discussion: The species was described from the modern plankton, but almost identical specimens occur in the Cretaceous so the same name is applied.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Braarudosphaera bigelowii): Pentaliths pentagonal with sraight edges and flat top surface
This taxon: Cretaceous specimens of Braarudosphaera bigelowii
