Taxonomic rank: species
Taxonomic discussion: The type species of Calyptrosphaera, C. globosa, is poorly established but since it is not known to be a life-cycle stage of a Syracosphaera species the genus can still be used. However, it would be better to describe a new genus for C. sphaeroidea.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (convex): Holococcoliths with tube, covered distally by a convex cover
This taxon: Tube merges into cover; irregular crystallites

Morphology:
Lith shape similar to S. pulchra HOL oblonga type but less regular; irregular wall fabric, crystallites rather larger than in most holococcoliths and with rough surface; CFCs not differentiated.

Biology & life-cycles
Noël et al. (2004) have shown from culture experiments that the alternate life-cycle phase of this species produces narrow-rimmed placoliths (see Calyptrosphaera sphaeroidea HET). They suggested that the hetrococcolith phase was neritic and the holococcolith phase pelagic.  Cytology described by Klaveness (1973), including evidence of a "skin" occurring beyond the holcoccoliths.
