Original description: Colonies up to 200µm diameter. Cells irregularly rectangular or cordate in dorsi-ventral view, 8.0-11.0 µm x 7.5-10.0 µm. Flagella two, sub-equal, heterodynamic in colonial cells, hetero- or homodynamic in monadoid cells; haptonema short (3.0/on), non-coiling. Appendages arising from a furrow between two anterior lobes of the cell, the lobes sometimes more or less acute, the cell thus appearing irregularly pyriform in lateral aspect. Large body scales oval, 0.30-0.35 µm x 0.21-0.25 µm, with raised concavo-convex rims, the convex face of the rim directed inwards, and a distal surface bearing a pattern of radiating ridges and a short four-strutted spine bridging a central pore. Small oval spineless scales (0.2-0.24 x 0.10-0.15 µm ) associated with the apical groove. Plastids two, parietal, lobed, yellow-green, each with an immersed fusiform pyrenoid.
