Variant: Cyclicargolithus bukryi is regarded here as a variant of Cyclicargolithus floridanus.
I.e. It is a subjective junior synonym. Some workers many find it useful for some studies (e.g. experienced biostratigraphers working with abundant, well preserved material), but for most purposes differentiating it is not reccomended. This taxon has not been widely used but Boesiger et al. (2017) record that it is a valuable marker in the Gulf of Mexico - with 5 abundance based events being used.
Varol & Bowman 2024 illustrate a specimen of Reticulofenestra bukryi Wise 1973, but the specimen they illustrate is larger and more elliptical than would fit in the species concept of Boesiger et al 2017.
Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Cyclicargolithus floridanus): Coccoliths circular to sub-circular with small central-area, <11µm in width.
This taxon: Small (3-6 µm), sub-circular with broad central opening (ca 20-25% of coccolith width)
| LITHS: placolith, circular, CA: ca_conjunct, CROSS-POLARS: rim-unicyclic, R-prominent, |
| Lith size: 3->6µm; Data source notes: Boesiger et al 2017 |
In the Gulf of Mexico there is an acme of the species low in NN5 (Boesiger et al. 2017). Vrol (2025) records the species as confined to NN5 but Boesiger et al (2017) state that it has its FO within NN45.
