Description of Leadbeater & Morton 1973: "Cells motile. Protoplast cylindrical 8- 10 μm long x 1 - 3 μm wide; 2 flagella approx. 20 μm long arising at one end of protoplast. Protoplast covered by fusiform scale case with tapered ends. Two types of scales present; large scales in the form of parallelograms 2- 6 μm long x 0.3- 2.0 μm wide, with raised sub-marginal rims. Proximal surface with a peripheral band of parallel ridges. and central area of sub-parallel ridges. Distal surface with a central irregular fibrillar pattern. Small elliptical scales 0.6- 0.8 μm long x 0.1- 0.2 μm wide located beneath adjacent edges of large scales; proximal surface with a pattern of radial ridges; distal surface with an irregular pattern of ridges and an inflexed rim."
