Prymnesium parvum

Classification: ntax_main -> other groups -> Haptophytes -> Prymnesiales -> Prymnesiaceae -> Prymnesium -> Prymnesium parvum

Taxonomy:
Citation: Prymnesium parvum Carter 1937
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Prymnesium parvum * Carter 1937
Taxonomic discussion: Larsen & Edvardsen (1998), Larsen (1999) showed that two Prymnesium "species" P. parvum and P. patelliferum were actually alternate life-cycle stages of a single species, P. parvum. Larsen (1999) proposed referring to these as forma but, as noted by Jordan et  al. 2004 this is not acceptable taxonomic practice.

Synonyms:

Original description: Cellula parva, paulum compressa, a fronte visa late elliptica, latitudine 1½—2 plo longiore, anteriore parte oblique truncata cum 3 flagellis; a latere visa angustiore, a vertice visa subcirculari; 2 chromatophoris fulvis; desunt stigma et vacuola contractilia; 2 longis flagellis cellulae longitudine circa 1½—2 plo longioribus, uno brevi flagello circa 1/3 cellulae longitudinis; cysto elliptico cum membrana delicate rugosa; epistomium non visum est.

Cell small, slightly compressed, seen from the front broadly elliptical, width 1½—2 times as long, obliquely truncated in the anterior part with 3 flagella; seen from the side narrower, seen from the top subcircular; 2 yellow chromatophores; stigma and contractile vacuole absent; 2 long flagella about 1½—2 times as long as the cell, one short flagellum about 1/3 of the cell length; elliptical cyst with delicately wrinkled membrane; epistomium not seen.
