Pseudoemiliania

Classification: ntax_main -> Isochrysidales -> Noelaerhabdaceae -> Pseudoemiliania
Sister taxa: Emiliania, Gephyrocapsa, Pseudoemiliania, Reticulofenestra, Noelaerhabdus, Bekelithella, Pyrocyclus

Daughter taxa (time control age-window is: 0-800Ma)
Pseudoemiliania lacunosa
Circular to sub-circular with >12 slits, length >4µm
Pseudoemiliania ovata
Elliptical and with <12 slits in the distal shield
Pseudoemiliania sp.
Specimens which cannot be assigned to established species

Taxonomy:
Citation: Pseudoemiliania Gartner, 1969
Taxonomic rank: genus
Type species: Pseudoemilinia lacunosa Kamptner 1963 ex Gartner 1969
Synonyms:
Variants: Pseudoemiliania coccoliths vary greatly in size, central opening size, number of slits and shape, although there is no strong stratophenetic evidence that more than one species is ever present - see also the taxonomic discussion

Taxonomic discussion: The validity of Pseudoemiliania has been disputed but van Heck (1990) showed that the name was validly proposed by Gartner.

Pseudoemilianai intergrades with Reticulofenestra minutula in the Late Pliocene and with R. asanoi in the Pleistocene, see Young (1990) for further discussion. If it is thought useful to subdivide the genus further then it would probably be most practical to simply do this by using size /shape classes without assigning names - as has been done by for instance Matsuoka & Okada (1989).

Alternatively De Kaenel et al. 1999 have proposed a 7 species scheme for this group
species number of slits coccolith length outline
Pseudoemiliania lacunosa var. lacunosa >12 4-10 µm circular to sub-circular
Pseudoemiliania pacifica 5-12 >6.5 µm elliptical
Pseudoemiliania lacunosa var. ovata 5-12 4-6.5 µm elliptical
Crenalithus asanoi 0-4 >6.5 µm elliptical
Crenalithus japonicus 0-4 5-6.5 µm elliptical
Crenalithus doronicoides 0-4 3-5 µm elliptical
Crenalithus sessilis 0-4 elliptical

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Noelaerhabdaceae): Heterococcoliths with Reticulofenestra-type structure, V-units vestigal, R-units forming grill, both shields, and two-layered tube
This taxon: With slits between some of the distal shield elements
