Retecapsa schizobrachiata

Classification: ntax_main -> Mesozoic nannofossils -> Podorhabdales -> Cretarhabdaceae -> Retecapsa -> Retecapsa schizobrachiata
Sister taxa: R. incompta ⟩⟨ R. angustiforata, R. beckii, R. octofenestrata, R. schizobrachiata ⟩⟨ R. crenulata, R. surirella, R. escaigii ⟩⟨ R. ficula, R. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Retecapsa schizobrachiata (Gartner, 1968) Grün in Grün&Allemann, 1975
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Vekshinella schizobrachiata Gartner, 1968
Synonyms:
Variants:

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Retecapsa): Cretarhabdids with central area spanned by an axial cross with lateral bars.
This taxon: Cretarhabdids with axial cross & 1 lateral bar per quadrant located towards the tips of the cross; central area relatively broad. The 8 central area holes are of unequal size. Medium to large (5-11 µm).

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: V. schizobrachiata * , R. levis * , R. tridentata *

Search data:
LITHS: placolith, elliptical, CA: cross-axial, ca_disjunct, grill, process, CROSS-POLARS: rim-unicyclic, R-prominent,
Lith size: 5->11µm;
Data source notes: original descriptions & illustrated specimens - big speciemsn (>8 µm) mostly from Campanian & Maastrichtian.
The morphological data given here can be used on the advanced search page. See also these notes

Geological Range:
Notes: There appear to be two sets of occurrences recorded:

Possibly two separate species are involved, in whichcase the Jurassic form should be called R. tridentata. However, note that R. angustiforata occurs in the intervening interval, and is distinguised only by having more prominent lateral bars, and a very large calyx  [my interpretation - JRY 2018]
Last occurrence (top): at top of Maastrichtian Stage (100% up, 66Ma, in Danian stage). Data source: Lees & Bown 2005 - consistently present to end Cret
First occurrence (base): within Early Callovian Substage (163.60-165.30Ma, base in Callovian stage). Data source: Bown & Cooper 1998
