Classification: ntax_main -> Mesozoic nannofossils -> Eiffellithales -> Chiastozygaceae -> Staurolithites -> Staurolithites mielnicensis
Sister taxa: << < S. handleyi, S. laffittei, S. dorfii, S. lumina ⟩⟨ S. imbricatus, S. dicandidula, S. mitcheneri ⟩⟨ S. angustus, S. mutterlosei, S. zoensis ⟩⟨ S. aachenus, S. aenigma, S. ellipticus, S. elongatus, S. integer, S. mielnicensis, S. parma, S. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Staurolithites mielnicensis (Górka, 1957) Perch-Nielsen, 1968 sensu Crux 1982
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Discolithus mielnicensis Górka, 1957
Synonyms: Vagalapilla imbricata imbricata (Gartner 1958) sensu Bukry (1969) - according to Burnett 1997 the specimens illustrated by Bukry 1969 as V. imbricata imbricata are better placed in S. mielnicensis.
Taxonomic discussion: The type figure is almost featureless so it is not entirely clear why this name ended up applied to this species. [my interpretation - JRY 2019]

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Staurolithites): Loxolith muroliths with relatively narrow rim and wide central area spanned by axial cross bars. The cross is usually spine bearing. Inner/proximal rim cycle is variably developed and so the LM image may be unicyclic or bicyclic. NB The bicyclic/unicyclic separation is simply controlled by how far the inwards the R-units develop so, although it is a useful identification criterion, it almost certainly has no real phylogenetic significance and would be a very poor character for defining genera.
This taxon: Bicyclic species with narrow rim, triangular feet to the crossbars give the species a distinctive LM appearance.
