Original description: Cells motile, elongate, ovate, 10-26 µm long, 5-10 µm wide, dorsoventrally compressed. Two fiagella and one haptonema arising close together at one end; fiagella equal, smooth, homodynamic, 8-20 µm long; haptonema shorter than fiagella 2.5-4.5 µm long. Plastids two, golden-brown, lateroparietal. Scaly investiture present, visible with light microscope. Scales of four forms;
largest elliptic plates 2.2-5.0 µm long, 1.3-3.5 µm wide, distal surface with a peripheral raised flap with short basal vertical bars and a central irregular fibrillar pattern, proximal surface with a pattern of radiating and crescentic ridges;
medium-sized elliptic plates 1.3-4.1 µm long, 0.7-2.8 µm wide, superficial patterns similar to above, in addition a peripheral band of coarse fibrils and a marginal pattern of pores and ridges on the distal surface;
smallest plate scales narrowly elliptic, usually associated with bases of spines, 1.3-2.8 µm long, 0.6-1.2 µm wide, distal surface with irregular fibrils and a broad cross-striated peripheral border, proximal surface with radiating ridges;
spines 20-31 µm long, usually posterior sometimes also anterior, shaft cross-banded, finely attenuated distally broadening to a spoon-shaped base, one surface of base with irregular fibrils the other with radial and crescentic ridges. Marine.

Morphology: The SEM images included here of specimens observed in the plankton seem likely to be the same taxon since they show large and small body scales, with no axial cross or spine and long spines at each end arising from irregular-shaped bases. However, it is not clear if the structure of the spine bases is the same as in the type illustrations. [my interpretation - JRY 2023]
Biology & life-cyclesDNA and cultures studies have shown that this form, which was previously previously regarded as a distinctive species of Chrysochromulina, is actually the motile phase of Braarudosphaera bigelowii.
Geological Range: Last occurrence (top): Extant. Data source: First occurrence (base): within No known fossil record modern (0.00-0.00Ma, base in "Holocene" stage). Data source:
