Taxonomy:

Citation: Prymnesium parvum Carter 1937; emend. Green et al. 1982
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Prymnesium parvum Carter 1937; emend. Green et al. 1982

Taxonomic discussion: Larsen & Edvardsen (1998), Larsen (1999) showed that two Prymnesium "species" P. parvum and P. patelliferum were actually alternate life-cycle stages of a single species, P. parvum. Larsen (1999) proposed referring to these as forma but, as noted by Jordan et  al. 2004 this is not acceptable taxonomic practice.

Catalog entries: Prymnesium parvum, Prymnesium patellifera

Morphology:

Cell oblong-spherical; Flagella equal-subequal, haptonema much shorter; Scales plate-like (2 types) with radial ribs on distal face, fibrils on proxima facel; Pyrenoids immersed (Edvardsen et al. 2011)

Cultures: Strains of this species are maintained in culture, for details see Roscoff Culture Collection.

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): Extant. Data source:
First occurrence (base): within No known fossil record modern (0.00-0.00Ma, base in "Holocene" stage). Data source:
