Nannotax - Content summary and plans

topstrip

As of early 20201 the content includes ca. 3,600 taxa and ca. 29,000 images in the main part, and ca. 4,700 original descriptions of taxa in the Farinacci & Howe catalog. Almost all taxa are illustrated and at least a short diagnosis, full citation, and geological range has been provided.

The palaeontological content originally came primarily from Bown (1998) Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and subsequent papers by Bown and Lees, the extant nannoplankton content came primarily from Young et al. (2003) A guide to extant coccolithophore taxonomy and unpublished images of Young. In both cases these sources have now been very significantly supplemented by additional material from the broader literature.

A list of publications we have taken images from is given below. A major priority has been to extend coverage of taxa published since the syntheses we used as our primary source, but we also try to include most taxonomically significant images.

Contributing images: Images are always welcome, whether from research atchives or publications, we reccomend using WeTransfer or dropbox to send images - use email jeremy.young@ucl.ac.uk. For this images can be sent as individual images or as plates of multiple sub-images; we can add scalebars if all images are the same magnification, otherwise there should be a scalebar on each image; square format images work best on the system (we will add a white box around non-square images); an excel spreadsheet should be used to provide for each image the taxon identification and any other metadata (ideally including location and stratigraphic age - using standard nannofossil zones). We are particularly interested in colour light micrographs, good quality SEMs and images from published papers.

Copyright: Images from US government publications, including DSDP & ODP reports, are in public domain. We have kindly been granted use of copyright images from INA Newsletter (INA), Journal of Micropalaeontology (The Micropalaeontological Society), Journal of Nannoplankton Research (INA), Palaeontology (Palaeontological Association), Micropaleontology (Micropaleontology Press) and Acta Protozoologica (Jagellonian University). We do not take images from commercially published journals for the main database unless we have image copies from the authors (for any publication the original plates remain copyright of the author so you can send us copies for use on the site).

Wishlist: There are many developments we hope to bring to the site, including:
