Hormosinella carpenteri

NB This site is under active development, current content in the main database is primarily from Bolli et al 1994, Hayward et al. 2012, Holbourn et al. 2013, Holbourn and Kaminski 1997, Alegret & Thomas 2001, and Katz et al. 2003. It is intended to expand and develop this to provide rather comprehensive coverage of Mesozoic and Cenozoic deep-sea benthic foraminifera.

Classification: bf_main -> Hormosinana -> Hormosinella -> Hormosinella carpenteri
Sister taxa: H. carpenteri, H. distans, H. sp.

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.

Description

Morphology:

Elongate, uniserial test, rectilinear or arcuate, composed of ovate, inflated chambers, broader at the base, separated by elongate, fragile, stolon-like necks. Chamber walls are thin and agglutinated, consisting of a single layer of well-cemented medium or coarse grains. The primary aperture is terminal, and round at the open end of the neck. [Holbourn et al. 2013]

Wall composition:
agglutinated

Search data:
TEST: elongate-cylindrical, separated chambers, uniserial, APERTURE: circular, terminal, produced,
Final whorl chambers: 1->1

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Geographic distribution

Worldwide. Predominantly North Atlantic “Challenger” stations (Jones, 1994).

Bathymetry remarks
Bathyal (350–1940 fathoms, Jones, 1994). [Holbourn et al. 2013]

Summary of depth range: upper bathyal -> lower bathyal (i.e. 200 -> 2000 m)

Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Notes: Late Paleocene to Recent (Jones, 1994).
Last occurrence (top): Extant. Data source: Holbourn et al. 2013
First occurrence (base): within Late Paleocene Sub-Epoch (55.96-59.24Ma, base in Thanetian stage). Data source: Holbourn et al. 2013

Plot of occurrence data:
NB The ranges given for genera and higher taxa are the total ranges of species included in that taxon in this database - so the true total range of the taxon will usually be longer
