Biorbulina

Citation: Biorbulina Blow 1956
taxonomic rank: Genus
Type species: Globigerina bilobata d'Orbigny, 1846.
Described on page(s) : 69

Current identification/main database link: Orbulina d’Orbigny, 1839

Original Description

Test bilobate, with ultimate and penultimate chambers nearly spherical and similar in size. Penultimate chamber partially or completely embracing the earlier ones. Apertures multiple, a series of rounded openings that are distributed irregularly over the area of the last and penultimate chambers; some but not all of the apertures may be present in the sutures between the last, penultimate and earlier chambers. Wall calcareous, composed of more than one layer. Surface cancellate, with numerous regularly arranged minute perforations.

Extra details from original publication
Remarks: The new genus Biorbulina has been erected because of its distinctive morphology and its independent evolution from Globigerinoides bispherica. The penultimate chamber embraces the earlier chambers, whereas in Orbulina it is the ultimate chamber which embraces all the earlier chambers.

Editors' Notes
Opinion of Brummer & Kucera 2022
A monotypic genus based on a species representing a morphological variant found in living Orbulina universa, which generally forms only one spherical chamber but may occasionally form a second, hemispherical chamber partially encompassing the previous spherical chamber, as observed during laboratory cultures (Caron et al., 1987; Bonnin et al., 2019), in the living plankton and in down-core sediments ranging into the Miocene. The genus (and species) is rejected as a junior synonym of Orbulina d’Orbigny, 1839a.
