Globigerina frontosa

Citation: Globigerina frontosa Subbotina 1953
taxonomic rank: Species

Current identification/main database link: Turborotalia frontosa (Subbotina 1953)

Original Description

[Translation from the Russian.- Test of average dimensions with a widely oval smooth outline, consisting of 2 whorls. There are 3 or 3.5 strongly inflated chambers in the final whorl. Peripheral margin broadly rounded, even. The essential characteristic of this species is the position of the first whorl, which is barely higherthan the test surface. To some degree it even looks like a depression inside the test. It is often barely discernible. In the last whorl, the considerable increase in size from the first to the final chamber is striking. Final chamber semispherical, sharply set off from the others because of its extraordinarily large size and characteristic shape. It often projects over the general outline of the test. It is characterisitc that the height of the final chamber is always less than its width, so that the chamber seems to be flattened from above. All the chambers are very closely adjacent to one another, often forming an almost spherical test. The dorsal and ventral sides are uniformly, strongly inflated. Umbilical depression very small, only weakly discernible.
