Current identification/main database link: Globoconella triangula (Theyer 1973)
Lamb and Beard‘s (1972) G. inflata variants from the early Pleistocene of the Gulf Coast, which would approximately correlate with late Gauss (J. H. Beard, personal communication), are within the morphologic range of the present subspecies. Specimens received from the above authors are somewhat smaller and thinner-walled than the present forms. If the paleomagnetic age of Lamb and Beard‘s variants is truly Gauss the present subspecies could be Pliocene to Pleistocene in range. Parker (1967) has illustrated a G. inflata variant from Indian Ocean core DODO117 (164-166 cm) that was sampled at a level correlated with Zone N 21 of Blow (1969). Her specimens are closer to transitional forms between the new subspecies and G. inflata s.s. There are no variations of G. inflata comparable to the present subspecies in the Holocene (compare Yen, 1971). Its subspecific level is supported by transitional specimens to G. inflata s.s., by the restricted distribution, and by the apparently short stratigraphic range.

Remarks : The new subspecies is easily distinguished from Globorotalia inflata inflata by the highly vaulted to subtriangular ventral side, flat dorsal side, narrow slit-like aperture, and by the three non-globose, subtriangular chambers of the last whorl. There is some variation in the inflation of the chambers, and specimens with three and a half chambers in the last whorl also occur. Rare specimens that are transitional between the new subspecies and the nominate subspecies have also been found. These have three and a half chambers which are more inflated, and their apertures are low arches.
