Original Description "Diagnosis.- Test free, biconvex, low-trochospirally coiled; equatorial periphery rounded to subangular. Wall calcaeous, perforate, surface coarse and finely pitted. Chambers subangular, 12-14, arranged in about two and one-half whorls; the last whorl with 6-7 chambers increasing moderately in size. Sutures on the spiral side tangential, straight to very slightly curved, slightly depressed, limbate; sutures on the umbilical side radial, straight, slightly depressed. Umbilicus small, deep. Aperture a distinct slit at the base of the last chamber, extraumbilical, covered with a small apertural lip. Size: Dimensions of holotype: Largest diameter 0.38 mm. Extra details from original publication Remarks: Globorotalia mattseensis is a frequent species in a number of samples from the lower Middle Eocene near Mattsee. The specimens are very close to Globorotalia broedemanni as illustrated by Bolli (1957b, pl. 37) from Trinidad, from the Globorotalia palmerae Zone, uppermost Lower Eocene. Bolli gave the upper range limit of Globorotalia broedermanni as the top of the Globigerapsis kugleri Zone, in the middle of the Middle Eocene. Through the courtesy of Prof. Bolli, the author was furnished with topotypes of Globorotalia broedermanni for comparison. This revealed that typical Globorotalia broedermanni occurs in our material only in definite Lower Eocene samples, but does not occur in any of the Middle Eocene samples. It is possible that the forms determined by Bolli as Globorotalia broedermanni in the Hantkenina aragonensis and Globigerapsis kugleri Zones of Trinidad are actually the morphologically similar Globorotalia mattseensis. Globorotalia broedermanni has a coarse but not finely pitted wall structure, a more angular axial periphery with a tendency to become strongly convex on the umbilical side, and the sutures of the spiral side are more strongly curved and are not limbate. The form illustrated by Bolli from the Globorotalia palmerae Zone of Trinidad might be transitional between Globorotalia broedermanni and Globorotalia mattseensis.
Stratigraphic range: As mentioned above, Globorotalia mattseensis does not occur in the Austrian material before the Middle Eocene. In the type sample this species is associated with Hantkenina aragonensis, Globanomalina wilcoxensis globulosa, Globigerina frontosa, G. ex gr. triloculinoides, G. aspensis, G. senni, G. eocaena, G. hagni, "Globigerinoides"" higgensi, and Globorotalia bullbrooki. In other samples, Globorotalia mattseensis was also found with Clavigerinella akersi, C. jarvisi, and Globorotalia aragonensis. This faunal association is typical for the Hantkenina aragonensis Zone of lower Middle Eocene age as defined by Bolli (1957b) in Trinidad. The youngest observed occurrence of the present species in the Austrian material is in the Assilina Marl of the Northhelvetikum near Nussdorf and in the Fossil Bed of the Southhelvetikum, corresponding to the upper part of Bolli's Globigerapsis kugleri Zone (Gohrbandt, 1963b, p. 54)."
