Original Description

Globorotalia menardii gibberula is a new subspecies which can be easily identified by its humped, dome-shaped test. Tt is primarily found in the subtropical latitudes between about 15° S. and 30° S. in the Indian Ocean and South Atlantic. Its distribution appears to show little overlap with that of Globorotalia menardii menardii which occurs mainly in the equatorial regions. Thus, G. menardii menardii (and G. menardii neoflexuosa in the Indian Ocean) can be considered the tropical subspecies, while G. menardii gibberula is the subtropical subspecies. Globorotalia menardii gibberula Be is found in large numbers in a belt from western Australia to Madagascar, and from the Walvis Ridge to the Rio Grande Rise. Its distribution in the Pacific is not yet delineated.

Description of the holotype. - Test fairly large. consisting of about two and one-half whorls of rapidly enlarging chambers arranged in a high, dome-shaped trochospire. There are five chambers in the last whorl. The spiral (dorsal) side is characteristically humped or arched by the spiral arrangement of all chambers of the last whorl. The apertural (ventral) side is relatively flat with depressed sutures. Umbilicus small. open and deep. The aperture extends from the umbilicus to the periphery and is bordered by a broad lip. The wall is finely perforate except along the base of the aperture.

Remarks. Globorotalia menardii gibberula has a characteristically humped, dome-shaped appearance from side view or from the spiral side. The humped look involves all chambers of the last whorl. G. menardii menardii differs from the new subspecies in having flat spiral and apertural sides. G. menardii neoflexuosa has initially a flat test, whose last-formed chambers(s) is twisted towards the apertural side. Thus, G. menardii neoflexuosa Srinivasan.

Kennett. and Be differs from G. menardii gibberula in that the former's flexuose (twisted) condition is restricted to the last-formeel chamber(s), whereas in the latter all the chambers of the last whorl contribute to the dome-shaped appearance."
