Original Description

Test planoconvex, coiled almost 100 percent sinistrally, periphery rounded, dorsal outline of test rounded, quadrangular; chambers few, large, rapidly increasing in size (particularly thickness) as added, four making up the final whorl, slightly inflated; sutures distinct, slightly depressed, nearly straight and radial; wall calcareous, perforate, densely covered with fine blunt spines; aperture very large, about as high as wide, surrounded by an inbent portion of the chamber and rimmed by a very narrow smooth lip.

Size:
Diameter about 0.30 mm.; thickness about 0.25 mm.

Extra details from original publication
This species differs from Globorotalia hirsuta (d'Orbigny) in having a thicker and more inflated test with rounded periphery, and in its large and high arched aperture. In the nature of the aperture it rather resembles a species described as trigonula d'Orbigny (Cushman, 1941, Cushman Lab. Foram. Res., Contr., vol. 17, pt. 2, p. 1p, pl. 11, fig. 6) from off St. Helena in the Atlantic Ocean and apparently never recorded from anywhere else. It has, however, an even more globular form and more nearly circular aperture and the final whorl is composed of four instead of three chambers .

Globorotalia oscitans differs from inflata d'Orbigny chiefly in type of wall surface which in the latter is smooth and polished but with the dense perforations through the wall giving the appearance of spinosity. Globigerina inflata, a considerably larger species, also differs in the whole test being more involutely coiled and in the aperture being less highly arched.

Fairly abundant in many other cores from the Mediterranean
