Citation: Globotruncana caliciformis sarmientoi Gandolfi 1955Taxonomic rank: sub-speciesType specimens: PI. 3, fig. 3a-c : type description p.47Type sample (& lithostrat): Km. 92 section, S. 5606. Type age (chronostrat): Campanian-MaastrichtianType locality: A section near Km. 92 on the Fonseca-Riohacha road, Rancheria Valley, 40 km. north of Fonseca, NE part of the State of Magdalena, northern Colombia.Type repository: Ithaca, New York; Paleontological Research Institution
Original Description Dorsal convexity more outstanding than in the previous species, chambers on the last whorl (four-five) fairly petaloid, flat on the dorsal side, slightly inflated on the ventral side. The sutures on the dorsal side are continuously but irregularly raised in the adult stages, somewhat beaded in the early stages. Ventrally the umbilicus is considerably narrow (as respect to Glt. caliciformis caliciformis), with well-developed arched lips of rosetta type; the sutures are deeply depressed, radial with sutural elevations completely absent or reduced to a slight thickening around the umbilicus. The form is single-keeled and the chambers are fringed by a kind of large umbilical peripheral limbation like many Globorotalia or Epistomina are. Size: Dimensions of holotype. Width 0.46 x 0.39 mm.; thickness, 0.18mm Etymology: named after R. Sarmiento, geologist of International Petroleum (Colombia), Limited. Extra details from original publication Remarks.— This species is morphologically related to Globorotalia pshadae Keller (1946). As well as can be judged from the poor figure, this form is a Globotruncana, perhaps belonging to the caliciformis branch but does not appear to be identical to our species, showing a completely flat umbilical side and a narrower umbilicus.
At any rate Glt. caliciformis sarmientoi and Glt. pshadae show that new conical lobate, single-keeled Globotruncana appear in Campanian-Maestrichtian time which are similar to rosetta forms but have a completely different genetical derivation.
