Higher taxa

Descriptions of taxa above generic level are listed here. Under the ICZN the family group inlcudes the ranks of Superfamily, Family, Subfamily and Tribe and a nmae described in any one of these ranks is also valid at any other of those ranks. So, where names have been used at more than one level within the family group they are listed here at the level they were originally described at. Significant sources for classification of planktonic foraminifera include Cushman (1927), Bolli et al. 1957, Banner & Blow (1959), Pearson et al. (2006), Boudagher-Fadel 2012, Wade et al. (2018). Arenillas et al. 2022 present an alternative classification, based on a different interpretation of the Palaeocene origins of various groups.
