Original Description

Diagnosis. Test medium sized to large, trochospiral, planoconvex, coiled into 2½-3 whorls, single keeled. Spiral side flat or slightly convex; umbilical side convex. Equatorial periphery subcircular to ovoid, spinose or without spines. Test in initial stage of development resembles that of Plummerita ex. gr. hantkeninoides (Bronniman) [Rugoglobigerina (Plummerella) hantkeninoides, 1952] in shape, composed of the chambers of the first whorls, which are small and globular, followed by larger and triangular chambers ofthe second whorl, which possess peripheral spines. Chambers of second whorl followed by four to six triangular, subrectangular, crescentic, petaloid, or rectangular chambers, usually slightly concave on spiral side and rectangular on umbilical side. Sutures on spiral side straight, oblique, raised, and beaded;on umbilical side slightly curved and raised. Umbilicus wide and deep, surrounded by periumbilical ridges, covered by chamber extensions or flaps forming semi-arcuate accessory apertures. Primary aperture closeto the lastchamber:interiomarginalumbilical. Surface ofthe test with tugosities well developed in chambers of earlier whorls (juvenile stage), gradually decreasing towards chambers of the third whorl (adult stage) without showing any meridional orientation. Wall calcareous, perforate with imperforate keel.

Extra details from original publication
Remarks: Kassabiana is the only genus in the family Globotruncanidae Brotzen, 1942, whose members have the Plummerita hantkeninoides shape in the juvenile stage and the single-keeled Globotruncana stage in the adult stage. Like those of Plummerita hantkeninoides, the chambers of the second whorl of Kassabiana have peripheral spines that also occur on the spiral side of the test in the adult stage.

The Plummerita hantkeninoides shape in the initial stage of the test in Kassabiana clearly indicates that the species of this genus evolved from Plummerita hantkeninoides costata (Bronnimann). Kassabiana differs from Plummerita, however, in being larger, in having triangular, petaloid, or crescentic chambers, and in possessing a single keel at the equatorial periphery, which is typical for the members of Globotruncana. On the other hand, Plummerita has globular chambers that are furnished with meridionally arranged rugosities or costellae, a morphological feature that is entirely lacking in the representatives of Kassabiana.

Stratigraphical level: The representatives of the genus Kassabiana are restricted to the uppermost Maastrichtian and range from the upper part of the Abathomphalus mayaroensis Zone to the top of the Maastrichtian. The Kassabiana falsocalcarata Zone is defined in the uppermost Maastrichtian of Tunisia on the basis of the range of the type species of Kassabiana.

Editors' Notes
The generic name Kassabiana was first proposed by Salaj 1983, however, no description of the genus was given, so the name was unavailable. A description was subsequently published by Salaj and Solakius (1984), hence authorship of the genus is from that paper. Paleogeographic distribution of Kassabiana was documented by Solakius et al. (1990).

The type species was given but the genus was not described. I added all the information: http://www.marinespecies.org/foraminifera/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=722182

If you need the original publication (1983) and have problems to find it in the archives of Geologica Carpathica, just let me know.

Thanks - I think I have it straight now - but if you have a copy of Salaj & Solakius 84 (Can J Earth Sci) that would be useful

Thanks for adding that - but do you know more detail - specifically was the description of the type species lacking or the the description of the genus?
