Hi Jeremy,
Thank you for your answer. I was not aware of this rule.
In your opinion how should be considered Praehedbergella ruka lato sensu? Is "lato sensu" including "stricto sensu" and is to be included pro parte under the genus Hedbergella?
François
To clarify - what Banner et al. did was to create a new species P. ruka and also to define formally two sub-species within it - P. ruka papillata and P. ruka contritus. By doing so they also automatically created the additional subspecies P. ruka ruka which would include the holotype [ICZN Arts 46 Principle of Coordination & 47. Nominotypical taxa]. For some strange reason though they referred to the species P. ruka (incling all three sub-species) as P. ruka sensu lato and to the species excluding the two separately named sub-species as P. ruka sensu stricto. Why they did so is a mystery to me, especially as all the authors were good taxonomists, working in the Natural History Museum and with expert working knowledge of the ICZN. Nonetheless, the idiosyncratic terminology they adopted is of no special relevance and the correct names must be P. ruka and P. ruka ruka.
Praehedbergella ruka stricto sensu?
Yes and no - as I see it, Praehedbergella ruka stricto sensu is the name in the publication but the correct name is Praehedbergella ruka ruka according to ICZN Art47 (Nominotypical taxa) and since this name was automatically established it the correct way to cite the taxon.
