Sphaeroidinella dehiscens excavata

Citation: Sphaeroidinella dehiscens excavata Banner & Blow 1965

"diagnosed by its deeply exacated suures exposing the inner whorls" [Banner & Blow 1965 p.1165]

"Paratype, BMNH No ZF 2369, illustrated in Brady 1884, pl 84, fig.8; cf S. dehiscens dehiscens, lectotypified by Banner & Blow 1960"

NB The word paratype is what appears in the publication, but it probably was a mistake and should have read "holotype". Banner & Blow 1967 reillustrate this specimen and refer to it as the holotype of the taxon.

This sub-species was introduced paranthetically within a short paper on establishment of a biostratigraphic zonation. The authors did not correctly designate a holotype and the taxon does not appear in the Ellis & Messina catalog. Nonetheless it has been regarded as valid by subsequent workers (e.g Blow 1979, Stainforth et al. 1975, Pearson 1995).
