Sphaeroidinella ionica

Citation: Sphaeroidinella ionica Cita & Ciaranfi 1972
Taxonomic rank: species

Original Description

Wall calcareous, perforate, with a well developed cortex. Coiling trochospiral, low; chambers rapidly increasing in size, about 10 overall, arranged in 2-2½ whorls. In the final whorl, 4 to 5 chambers are visible, separated by intercameral sutures slightly depressed. Primary aperture interiomarginal, intraumbilical. One or more supplementary apertures are visible on the spiral side, along the spiral suture.

Extra details from original publication
The distinction of the subspecies S. ionica ionica and S. ionica evoluta is based on the apertural characters, essentially on the supplementary apertures (see below).

REMARKS ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE TAXON. Sphaeroidinella ionica sp. nov. evolves from Sphaeroidinellopsis seminulina (Schwager), from which it differs for the presence of one or more supplementary apertures, in the Sphaeroidinellopsis Acme-zone (of Cita, 1973), at the same time as Sphaeroidinella dehiscens evolves from Sphaeroidinellopsis subdehiscens. The Sphaeroidinella datum can therefore be identified not only by means of the first evolutionary appearance of Sphaeroidinella dehiscens (subspecies immatura), but also of S. ionica (subspecies ionica).

STRATIGRAPHIC RANGE. Sphaeroidinella ionica sp. n. ranges from the earliest Pliocene (Sphaeroidinellopsis Acme-zone) to the Pleistocene, as recorded in deep-sea Mediterranean sediments cored during Leg XIII of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. On the basis of the observational data now available, the subspecies ionica appears to be limited to the Pliocene, while the subspecies evoluta is only recorded from the Pleistocene.
