Benthic origins

Classification: pf_cenozoic -> Benthic origins
Sister taxa: Globigerinidae, Globorotaliidae, Hantkeninidae, Truncorotaloididae, Globanomalinidae, Genera incertae sedis ⟩⟨ Hastigerinidae ⟩⟨ Globigerinitidae, Candeinidae ⟩⟨ Guembelitrioidea, Benthic origins, hidden
Daughter taxa (time control age-window is: 0-800Ma)Granddaughter taxa

Bolivina merecuanai
Bolivina nairi
Bolivina pseudoplicata
Bolivina sp.
Bolivina variabilis

Initially biserial may become multiserial, smooth, microperforate wall; aperture simple (no lip or toothplate).
Neogallitellia vivans
Neogallitellia sp.

Like Chiloguembelina but with an internal plate connecting successive chambers, a prominent extension of an apertural collar, and a smoother surface texture.

Citation: Benthic origins
taxonomic rank: family
Taxonomic discussion: Molecular genetic data on the extant species Gallitelia vivans and Streptochilus globigerus has shown that they fall outside the clade of the other extant planktic foraminifera and so have separate origins from the benthic foraminifera (Darling et al. 2007, Ujiie et al. 2008). The same may apply to some fossil taxa currently placed in the Guembelitriodea.
These two taxa are not directly related but it is convenient to group them here.

Catalog entries: Bolivinidae [no catalog entry yet]

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (pf_cenozoic): This is a polyphyletic grouping including all Cenozoic planktonic foraminifera
This taxon: Biserial (separate evolutionary origin)

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.
