Sister taxa: C. adriatica, C. cubensis, C. andreae, C. ototara ⟩⟨ C. parallela, C. trinitatensis, C. wilcoxensis, C. crinita ⟩⟨ C. subtriangularis, C. midwayensis, C. morsei, C. sp.

Taxonomy

Citation: Chiloguembelina crinita (Glaessner 1937)
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Guembelina crinita
Synonyms:
Taxonomic discussion: The later chambers of Chiloguembelina crinita specimens are much higher and more inflated than those of C. midwayensis and C. morsei. These differences are readily observable, as late-stage chambers of C. crinita appear subglobular in edge and plain views. [Olsson et al. 1999]

Catalog entries: Guembelina crinita

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Chiloguembelina): Test subtriangular in outline, biserial throughout or rarely with multiserial final chambers; aperture a simple arched opening at base of the final chamber, with a narrow rim on one margin and a broad collar or flange directed toward one of the flat sides of the test, lacking an infolded margin or internal plate. Rarely with multiple apertures.
This taxon: Test biserial throughout; aperture is marked by a narrow lip, infolded on one side, and expanded into a distinct apertural flange on the opposite side. Later chambers are subglobular. The sutures distinct and depressed. Test microperforate and last chambers finely hispid.

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.

Description

Diagnostic characters:

The test is biserial throughout and exhibits the characteristic chiloguembelinid apertural asymmetry; its aperture is marked by a narrow lip, infolded on one side, and expanded into a distinct apertural flange on the opposite side. As noted by Beckmann (1957) and Loeblich and Tappan (1957a), its later chambers are subglobular. The sutures are distinct and depressed. The test is microperforate and the last chambers are finely hispid. [Olsson et al. 1999]

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Phylogenetic relations

Believed to have evolved from Chiloguembelina midwayensis (Beckmann, 1957). [Olsson et al. 1999]

Most likely ancestor: Chiloguembelina midwayensis - at confidence level 4 (out of 5). Data source: Olsson et al. 1999, f6.
Likely descendants: Chiloguembelina ototara; Chiloguembelina wilcoxensis; Streptochilus martini; plot with descendants

Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Notes: Upper Paleocene through middle Eocene (Zones P4-E9) based on study of samples from DSDP Site 390A on Blake Nose (Huber, pers. observ.). Specimens of C. crinita have been rarely reported from upper lower and lower middle Eocene sediments probably because of its small size and taxonomic confusion with other chiloguembelinid species. [Huber et al. 2006]
Last occurrence (top): within E9 zone (43.23-43.85Ma, top in Lutetian stage). Data source: Huber et al. 2006
First occurrence (base): within P4a subzone (60.52-60.73Ma, base in Selandian stage). Data source: Olsson et al. 1999
