Globigerinatella sp.

Citation: Globigerinatella Cushman & Stainforth 1945
taxonomic rank: genus
Type species: Globigerinatella insueta Cushman & Stainforth 1945
Taxonomic discussion: The distinguishing feature of Globigerinatella is its small, subglobular test with the final chamber embracing the early trochospiral portion and distinct areal and supplementary apertures. The surface is microperforate, with extremely small, irregularly distributed pores , without pore pits, and is covered largely by small, subconical tubercles or crystallites as in Globigerinita (Pl. 56, Fig. 2).
The strongly embracing final chamber and areal and sutural supplementary apertures provides a superficial resemblance with Orbulina. However, it distinctly differs from Orbulina in surface ultrastructure in the character of the areal apertures, which are surrounded by lips, and in its relatively smaller test size. [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Globigerinitidae): Microperforate
This taxon: globular test, final chamber embraces the earlier spiral part; numerous areal and supplementary apertures

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Geographic distribution

Phylogenetic relations
The test size and microperforate ultrastructure of Globigerinatella indicates strong affinities with Globigerinita and Candeina. Blow (1969) suggested that Globigerinatella evolved from Globigerinita ambitacrena (= synonym of Ga. glutinata). Globigerinatella is a short-ranging, geographically restricted monospecific genus (Text Fig. 25). [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Most likely ancestor: Globigerinita - at confidence level 3 (out of 5). Data source: Kennett & Srinivasan 1983, fig 25.
